General Information
There are only 2 species which occur in Europe - the Comma
Polygonia c-album, and the Southern Comma P. egea. The former is more heavily
marked, and has a darker underside bearing a distinct comma-shaped mark.
Habitat
A rather local species from hot dry places in southern
Europe. It frequents walls, cliffs and rock faces where the larval foodplant
grows - these places are often extremely hot in summer! Cliffs or rocky places,
often with open woodland or scrub nearby. Also found in villages where walls
and rough places provide niches for the food plant to grow.
Hostplants
The larvae feed on Parietaria officinalis.
Distribution
The Southern Comma is found in south-east France, Italy,
most Mediterranean islands, Croatia, Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece,
Turkey, and east to Syria, Iran and north-west India.
Flying period
Flies throughout the summer in 2 or 3 generations.
Hibernates as an adult, emerging in early spring.
Observation Notes
It is common in Balkans. Can be seen while resting on the rocks
in the daytime.
